autoAdd and autoCommit doesn't seem to work

Getting more familiar with chezmoi. Great tool! Thanks heaps!

One thing though I can't figure out: autoAdd and autoCommit don't seem to work for me.

My complete ~/.config/chezmoi/chezmoi.toml is:

sourceDir = "~/Dropbox/sync/chezmoi" # on Dropbox machines

autoAdd = true
autoCommit = true

Now I take a new file ~/.xonshrc which is not in chezmoi yet and do

$ chezmoi add .xonshrc

Then I check chezmoi's git repo:

$ chezmoi git status

and I get the output:

On branch main
Untracked files:
  (use "git add <file>..." to include in what will be committed)
        dot_xonshrc

nothing added to commit but untracked files present (use "git add" to track)

Why's that? Do I misunderstand things?

How can I tell chezmoi to commit every change in the source directory straight away to its git repo?

As @twpayne has kindly described in his reply to issue 3824, "the variables are git.autoAdd and git.autoCommit, as described in the documentation".

So the relevant portion of the config.toml file needs to read:

[git]
autoAdd = true
autoCommit = true
