We see the following as plausible interpretations:

1. [When something else happened] Deniz was sleeping.
2. [By the time something else happened] Deniz had fallen asleep.

(I'm not sure this is ambiguous in Turkish or not—just trying to make sure we understand it right.)

In this case, the only fact is that Deniz fell asleep at some point in the past. They might be awake or still sleeping by the time, but that information is not in this data. If they were still sleeping, this sentence could be "Deniz uyuyor idi" to be more specific, but this does not neglect the fact that current data also includes this case in possibilities.
