Did you think about low-profile/recessed ethernet jack like these ones? https://www.digikey.com/products/en?FV=ffec8ca8
The variants with integrated magnetics are expensive though IIRC.

It's doable, i just went for the easiest option. Maybe it would take a little more space on the board, but the components should still fit inside.
I'm not planning to do any modification to the project any time soon unfortunately, maybe for a future version i'll see what i can do
