Hair Salon Booking System Planning Document

Functional Requirements

Customer-Facing Features

  • User Registration and Authentication: Customers can create accounts and securely log in.
  • Appointment Booking: Browse available time slots and book appointments without double-booking conflicts.
  • Service Selection: View and select from a list of services offered.
  • Booking Management: View, modify, or cancel existing bookings.
  • Notifications: Receive email/SMS confirmations and reminders.

Employee Features

  • Employee Login: Staff members have individual accounts to access their schedules.
  • Schedule Management: View and manage personal appointment schedules.
  • Availability Settings: Set availability and block out times when not available.

Admin Features

  • Admin Dashboard: Comprehensive overview of daily bookings, staff schedules, and salon performance.
  • User Management: Add, modify, or remove employee accounts.
  • Reporting: Generate reports on bookings, revenue, and employee performance; export data to Excel.
  • Service Management: Add or update services offered, including pricing and duration.

Non-Functional Requirements

  • Scalability: Able to handle increased load, e.g., for large salons like Cutters.
  • Performance: Fast load times and responsive interactions.
  • Security: Protect user data with robust authentication and authorization mechanisms.
  • Maintainability: Clean, well-documented codebase for future development.
  • Reliability: Ensure high availability and fault tolerance.
  • Usability: Intuitive user interface and user experience.
  • Compliance: Adhere to relevant data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR).

Technology Stack

Backend

  • Language: Node.js (JavaScript/TypeScript)
  • Framework: NestJS for a scalable and maintainable structure.
    • Future-proof and supports enterprise-grade applications.
    • Built with TypeScript, encouraging type safety.
  • Database:
    • Primary: PostgreSQL for relational data storage.
    • Cache: Redis for caching frequently accessed data and managing session data.
  • Authentication: JSON Web Tokens (JWT) with refresh tokens for secure API access.

Frontend

    • Composition API allows for better organization in larger applications.
  • State Management: Pinia (the successor to Vuex) for managing application state.
  • Routing: Vue Router for navigating between views.

DevOps and Deployment

  • Containerization: Docker for consistent environments across development, testing, and production.
  • Orchestration: Kubernetes or Docker Compose for managing containers.
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD): Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI for automatic building, testing, and deployment.

System Architecture

Overview

The system will follow a modular architecture separating the frontend, backend, and database layers.

  1. Frontend Client:

    • Runs in the browser.
    • Communicates with the backend via RESTful API calls.
    • Provides interfaces for customers, employees, and admins based on roles.
  2. Backend API:

    • Exposes RESTful endpoints for all functionalities.
    • Handles business logic, authentication, and authorization.
    • Interacts with the database and cache layers.
  3. Database Layer:

    • PostgreSQL stores persistent relational data.
    • Redis used for session management, caching, and handling real-time features (e.g., notifications).

Interaction Flow

  1. A customer accesses the booking interface via the frontend.
  2. The frontend communicates with the backend API to fetch available time slots.
  3. Upon booking, the backend validates the request, ensures no double-booking via Redis locks, and stores the appointment in PostgreSQL.
  4. Notifications are sent, and the employee's schedule is updated accordingly.

Database Design

Entities and Relationships

  1. Users

    • Attributes: id, name, email, password, role (customer, employee, admin), contact_info, created_at, updated_at
    • Stores all user information with role-based access.
  2. Employees

    • Attributes: id, user_id, specializations, availability, created_at, updated_at
    • Linked to the Users table via user_id.
  3. Services

    • Attributes: id, name, description, duration, price, created_at, updated_at
    • List of services offered by the salon.
  4. Bookings

    • Attributes: id, customer_id, employee_id, service_id, start_time, end_time, status, created_at, updated_at
    • Represents appointments; references Users, Employees, and Services.
  5. Payments (Optional for future implementation)

    • Attributes: id, booking_id, amount, payment_method, status, transaction_date
  6. Reports

    • Generated on-demand; data pulled from existing tables.

Database Constraints

  • Uniqueness: Ensure email addresses are unique in the Users table.
  • Foreign Keys: Maintain referential integrity between tables.
  • Indexes: Optimize queries on frequently accessed fields (e.g., start_time in Bookings).

API Design

Authentication

  • Endpoints:
    • POST /auth/register: Register a new user.
    • POST /auth/login: Authenticate user and provide JWT.
    • POST /auth/refresh: Refresh access tokens.
  • Middleware: Protect routes using JWT verification.

Customer APIs

  • GET /services: List all available services.
  • GET /employees: View employees and their specializations.
  • GET /availability: Check available time slots for a service and employee.
  • POST /bookings: Create a new booking.
  • GET /bookings/{id}: Retrieve booking details.
  • PUT /bookings/{id}: Modify an existing booking.

  • GET /employees/{id}/schedule: View own schedule.
