If I only want to tangle a subtree, does adding auto-tangle for a header arg of the subtree work? If not, I propose this as a feature. Wasn't sure based on the README.

No it can not do that at the time. I will label it as an enhancement (i.e. feature request) and work on it in the coming weeks. I think it might be easy enough to implement.
