This is a categorization of the tools we're using and exploring in the context of the Bixal Methods. In general, "active use" implies we're using them on client projects and probably in collaboration with others. "Exploring" implies we may be using them on side/internal projects or in a limited fashion on client projects, maybe on our own.

This list may not include every single tool, but probably covers about 90% of what we're using.

Active Use

Tools we use across all or most method groups

  • Miro
  • Sketch
  • InVision (Freehand, Prototype)
  • Excel/Sheets

Tools we use for some method groups

  • InVision DSM
  • Optimal Workshop
  • TryMyUI
  • Google Analytics
  • Flowmapp (personas, user flows, site maps, journey maps)

Tools we use to summarize and communicate

  • Teams (chat, wiki, meetings, videos)
  • Word/Docs
  • PDF
  • Powerpoint/Slides
  • InVision Boards
  • Keynote (if required 😬)

Exploring

Tools we're trying out

  • Airtable (content and data)
  • GatherContent (content workflow)
  • Optimal Workshop Reframer (qualtitative data analysis)
  • Coggle (flows and diagrams)
  • Lucid Chart (flows and diagrams)
  • Xtensio (persona templates)
  • Otter.ai (recording transciption)

Criteria for evaluating whether to move tool from "exploring" to "active use"

  • What problem does this tool solve for you that other tools in active use don't?
  • How does this tool either overlap or conflict with any other tools, or parts of tools, in our current tool set?
  • What specific features do you find valuable?
  • Would it be used across all/most method groups or some?
  • What capability is there for exporting data we create with this tool?
  • What licensing/pricing options do you recommend?
  • Would the cost be absorbed by Bixal or a client project?
  • Are there any security implications to consider?
  • Do you have any concerns about this tool?
