In case it's of use to you or others, I'm sharing a modification of your code that works on an ESP8266 microcontroller running MicroPython v1.17.
It is not tested but should work on many other platforms and versions of MicroPython.
If you'd like to incorporate it but would like corrections or stylistic modifications, please let me know.
