If you are not familiar with the Kinect Sensor, here is a detailed Microsoft authored document explaining the Kinect and its capabilities in detail from the user perspective.

For developers, there is good documentation available online. Since the time Kinect was decommissioned on October 25, 2017, this documentation was offline for a while. However, it is online again but not actively maintained anymore.

How does Kinect detect distances? Checkout the YouTube video below to understand how the Kinect is able to detect the distances of the objects in front of it. This distance information is crucial when detecting the human skeleton and joints.
