Now a historical reference, however you may want to look at the old Simile project for some thinking that they did on nested/collapsible timelines.

Yes. I used this in my dissertation to create a timeline of various events related to Antarctic environmental governance. The challenge there was that there we long periods (decades) where there was little activity, then periods where policy events were happening monthly or even daily, then back to years of inactivity. This provide a nice approach for representing these different timescales on a single timeline. The labelling was also quite flexible, allowing the use of relative time (if I recall correctly).

Provided an option to replace the dual handle timeline slider. By default the this new option is set to false but if the showSingleHandle option is set to true in the timeline widget, the dual handle slider will be replaced with a single handle.
A timeline with a single time-slider handle will initially have a interval set to the minimum range, allowing the user to move the handle to expose more items on the map, as you move through the time range.
This addresses issue #601
Note: This is the same code as before, I just moved it to a separate branch.
