Overview

• Task 2: Develop preferred approach to cross-repository search

Deliverables

• List of user stories and requirements for cross-repository search with a focus on how different stakeholders, such as people from funding agencies and educational institutions, currently search for data across multiple repositories, and document this understanding so that it can inform solutions for improving browse and search across GREI repositories.
• Meet with folks from DataCite and National Library of medicine to learn about the discovery work and the use cases that are informing their products, e.g. DataCite Commons and NLM Dataset Catalog, in order to help us determine how we can leverage their existing and planned work to support the different uses related to cross-repository search
• Document recommendations for metadata needed to support external cross-repository search
• Publish GREI recommendation regarding supporting cross-repository search

Status: August 2024

• The task group met on August 15, 2024 to review the task group's standard operating procedure, how often it'll meet, and its deliverables. Two members are working on a framework for collaborating on the first deliverable, learning about and listing user stories and requirements for cross-repository search, which they'll share during the task group's next meeting on September 16, 2024.

Status: September 2024

• In a task group meeting on September 16, 2024 and during the third annual NIH GREI meeting (agenda), members of the task group discussed the goals of cross repository search, including who it would benefit, how best to get feedback from them, and how cross repository search depends on the quality of metadata at each member repository.
• The group plans to invite the creators of the NLM Data Catalog to talk about their use cases and what they've learned about building a cross-repository search system.

Status: October 2024

• The task group continued working on profiles and questions for defining the types of users it wants to engage, with the help of the community engagement task group, in order to learn about how cross repository search has been done so far and to inform an approach for cross-repository search.
• The task group met on October 28 to plan next steps and agreed to reach out to folks from DataCite and NLM's beta catalog to learn about their discovery work and the use cases that their products are meant to address in order to help us determine how their existing and planned work can be leveraged to support the different uses related to cross-repository search.
