Pallet Town & Viridian City
When you start your playthrough, you'll immediately be struck with something new: sex choices! Get your character set up and you'll be landed in good ol' Pallet Town. After you collect your Potion from your PC and try to leave, you'll be dragged to the lab by Professor Oak, where you get not three, but five choices in starter!
You get access to Pikachu and Eevee in addition to your usual choices! If you choose one, your rival will choose the other.
But now, Oak needs his parcel...
Route 1 has received some wild encounter enhancements, but is otherwise the same. Let's have a look...
Pokemon | Level Range | Probability |
---|---|---|
Pidgey | 2-5 | 40.3% |
Rattata | 2-4 | 44.9% |
Coinpur | 2-3 | 19.6 |
You can pick up a Konya once you get your Poke Balls! It's a handy Pokemon to pick up, having Pay Day available very early!
Arriving in Viridian City, you'll see this town has two gyms! It seems that the usual Gym Leader has disappeared. If you want a challenge, well, why not enter the one closest to you now? Or, you could leave it for later and continue that errand. If you enter, though...

He's most likely too difficult for you to defeat right now. You could go to Route 22, though...
On Route 22, you can find a few useful Pokemon! Mankey and Nidoran-M benefit from their movesets from Pokemon Yellow, so if you picked Charmander or Pikachu, they will be very helpful in your initial Brock grind!
Pokemon | Level Range | Probability |

Rattata | 3-4 | 29.7% |

If you venture further, you will meet a familiar face...
If you beat the Rival now, you can get some initial 5 Poke Balls from Professor Oak.
