Add a textarea field with limited characters

Download the zip package
Create a folder under addons/shared_addons/field_types/ and name it textarea_limited
Copy and paste the zip content.

That's it!

The field type has the same properties as the textarea field, only an aditional one:

Character limit: set it to the limit you want
