This sounds really cool, but how does it work?

Anemone3DS is very ergonomic - that is, it's super easy to use.
Your first step is to work out which theme/splash you want to use. A good source for themes and splashes is Theme Plaza; Anemone ships with a browser, accessible by a touchscreen button, that allows you to browse Theme Plaza.

Once you've decided what to use, you'll need to put them on your 3DS's SD card. There are two ways to do so:

Using FTP/an SD card adapter

If you haven't already launched Anemone once, you'll need to create /themes and /splashes (capitalisation doesn't matter) on your SD card root.
Once you've done that (or if you've launched Anemone), just drag and drop your theme and splash ZIP files into their respective folders.
After that, insert the SD back (if using an adapter) into your 3DS, start it up, and run Anemone.

Scanning a QR code

Note: This will only work with CFW (or using Rosalina Homebrew Launcher from Luma3DS) If you want to download themes (or splashes!) more easily, just press 'R' to open the QR scanner in Anemone, and point your camera at a QR code.
On Theme Plaza, the QR code can be found by, on desktop, hovering your cursor over the theme's preview, and on mobile by tapping its preview.

What if Anemone complains about my QR?

If some error message pops up, rest assured that it's probably not your fault - your QR just doesn't point to a ZIP file containing either a body_LZ.bin or a splash.bin/splashbottom.bin. Try some other QRs, for example some over at Theme Plaza, and if the problem persists we're always available to help on the Theme Plaza Discord in #anemone-help.

Actions

Themes

To get into this mode, press the 'T' on the touch screen, or L, whilst in splash mode.
If you're used to how installation worked in older versions of Anemone, or in Themely, things might feel a little different now.
There are now three ways to install just one theme, and an additional shuffle installation (more later) - these three are all separate options in Themely, but due to how much more we do, we use a method that puts all installation types on A.
To go into 'installation mode', hold A, and then

  • To install a theme normally, with both its aesthetics and its sound effects/BGM, hold Up and release A. This is the typical 'Single install' from older versions of Anemone.
  • To install a theme without its BGM, preserving the BGM that was already there (a difference to Themely's no-BGM installation), hold Right and then release A.
  • To install only a theme's BGM, preserving the theme that was already there, hold Left and then release A.

Splashes

Splashes are far more simple - just switch to splash mode (press the 'S' on the touch screen, or L, whilst in theme mode) and press A to install the splash. Note that this only writes your theme to the /luma directory on your SD card, which means that you can't remove your SD card and expect your splash to still work (how to get that working is beyond the scope of this wiki).
The other feature specific to splash mode is pressing B to delete your current splash from your SD card. This is irreversible - if you don't have the splash in /splashes anymore, you won't be able to reinstall it without reacquiring it.

Either mode

Press Y to preview how the current item will look on your when used.
Press Select to delete the current item from your SD card. This is irreversible, just like deleting the current splash!
The X button will reload your icons if they are out of order or missing.

Shuffle installation

Shuffle in Anemone is almost identical to that used by Nintendo's own Home Menu - you select between 2 and 10 themes to shuffle together, and the current theme changes whenever you close and reopen the Home Menu.
In order to queue up a theme for shuffling, press B. A icon will appear on each theme you toggle on, and will disappear from each you toggle off. You can enqueue up to 10 themes - whilst Anemone will let you enqueue more than 10 or less than 2, it will refuse to actually install that many/few.
Once you have toggled on 2-10 themes, inclusive, hold A, press and hold Down, and finally, release A.
