check list before departing from field

  1. Use long-nose pliers to check Individual cable connection to din rails
  2. Check if guy wire is tight
  3. Check if the bottom of the tripod is supported either by concrete pegs (soft ground) or bolts (concrete ground)
  4. when solar panel is under light, check whether the top red led from solar regulator is flashing (the other two below are constantly on, meaning battery and data logger are connected), meaning the battery is charging.
  5. Check if ground lug in the enclosure is connected to the tripod using provided green and yellow cable
  6. Check if 3G modem is connected (constant blue light)
  7. Check if Single Chip Computer is on, as indicated by the green light
  8. Check if desiccant is put on the battery
  9. Check if the un-used cable glands are sealed by ear plug to avoid insects and fog
  10. Check if the nuts behind the locker on the enclosure door is tightly screwed on
  11. Check if the hole behind the door is filled (critical)
  12. Check if bird spike is installed
  13. Allow cable slacking outside the enclosure, so that any pull force on the cable would be resisted by the slack, not the din rails
  14. Twist the rain gauge, ensure it is snapped properly. Bird spike is installed above the rain gauge.
  15. Pull individual cable from the outside of the cable gland to check if the cable gland is screwed as tight as possible
  16. Check battery connector is tight and sealed using tape
  17. Check power connector on the data logger is connected tightly.
  18. Check if antenna is stretched outside of the enclosure. Make sure the antenna connection to modem is tight.
  19. Check if solar panel and solar intensity sensor are facing north, enclosure are facing south (to avoid over heat by sun)
  20. Check if the enclosure is locked properly
  21. Take a few good photos of the setup and surrounding environment
  22. Ensure the steel bars, in particular the both ends of them are painted by rust guard before field deployment, as rust tends to develop at the corner of the steel bar where they were cut, and will eventually cause scale off and collapse over three years!

Full list of items to be used for sampling groundwater from a shallow bores ( water level less than 7 m BGL)

a video demo is here

  1. Perri pump (geo pump)

  2. Bottles (500 ml for anions and 2 x 60ml for cations for each borehole), esky, ice bricks ( need to be frozen the day before the field work)

  3. Disposable latex gloves, to wear during groundwater sampling to the bottles so that contamination can be avoided.

  4. Telescopic scoop for sampling creek water and ponding water, in case if the bank soil is too soft

  5. Electrical tape, to seal the water sampling bottles cap. Ensure that the tape is sealing the cap in a direction opposite to the thread of the sampling cap.

  6. Peristaltic Pump and tubing, provided (Notice: the Peristaltic Pump will be powered by 12V DC from vehicles, so vehicles must be parked next to the sampling bores)

  7. Hanna water quality probe, provided, (note that the rubber cap on the pH sensor needs to be removed before water quanlity measurement. when the measurement is completed, fill the rubber cap with pH 10 solution provided and put it on to the pH probe)

  8. 2L plastic container with volume marks and bucket for collecting sampling water

  9. Masking tape and permanent maker, to put labels on the water sampling tubing, indicating the length of tubing inserted into the bore. the water depth label is needed because the tip of the water sampling tube is ideally located at the screen of the bore. if too much tubing is inserted, the tip (inlet) may be submerged in the mud at the bottom of the borehole, resuling in muddy groundwater samples or block of the tubing.

  10. Pen and paper sheets to record data during water samppling

  11. Permanent marker, to label the sampling bottle, provided ( note that for the cation bottles, it needs to indicate if it is filtered (for dissolved ions) or not filtered (for total ions))

  12. Bore Dip Tape with a 9V battery to measure water level during sampling. note that bore dip can also be used as a tape measure.

  13. flow cell, to install the water quanlity meter, and allow continuous measurement of water quanlities (avoid oxydisation).

  14. Power supply kit for Peristaltic Pump. could be either a car ciggret charger, or a 12V DC lead acid battery.

  15. a long section of tubing, to be inserted to the borehole in one side and connected to the inlet of the flow cell on the other side

  16. shore section of tubing, on side to be connected to the outlet of the flow cell, and the other to be connected to the beaker

  17. small foldable table, to place all the devices on during sampling

  18. syringe with luer lock and filters, to inject groundwater samples in the water samplling bottles.

  19. some strings or cable ties to fix the flow cell on the table legs.

  20. optional: Calibration solutions

  21. deionised water, to wash the water quanlity meter after it is been used repeatedly

  22. one extra bag to collect gabbages

  23. kitchen towel to clean and excess water

  24. tool box with screwdrivers and pliers

Safety items Firstaid kit Phone GPS
high viz clothing, steel cap shoes and hats water bottle and foods gum boots, face masks

Maintenance of equipment

Cutter, provided

Pliers for cable ties, provided

Duct tapes, provided

Cable ties bulk, provided

Enclosure keys, provided

10-14 metric wrench. 5/16 socket wrench, or an adjustable wrench to tight any loosen bolts identified, provided

Things to be prepared:

There are few items you need to prepare which are too heavy to ship from Brisbane:

Shover x1 , to bury piezometer sensor cables if they are exposed to air. We saw cables buried in the soil gets exposed to the air over time, likely because animal scratch their skins on the bole stickouts.

Hammer x1 to fix starpickets Gumboots Snake gaiters Snake bands Water Phone Foldable table Heavy duty gloves
