## About the package This package creates an Android update for a Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660 running Android 2.3.3. It can also run on any other phone running 2.3.3 that has a rfs filesystem on /system and is located on an MTD partition. However, this README and the Makefile should contain enough information to make an update for your own phone. Linux experience and knowledge of the C programming language is assumed. So don't use this if you don't know what you're doing. This update deploys a 'su' binary like found on the Android emulator image. This 'su' binary allows you to run root commands, but only if you are the 'shell' user. You can become the 'shell' user by connecting via the Android Debug Bridge (adb) from the Android SDK. There are two ways to use the 'su' binary: $ su $ su <uid> <command> The update can be installed by booting into recovery mode. Make sure you have enough free space on /system to deploy 'su'. The Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660 can be booted in recovery mode by holding down the home button while the device is powered off. You can then navigate using the volume up and volume down buttons, and confirm with the home button. Go to 'apply update from sdcard', and then select the update file that you just created. Note that the update file must be located on the root of the SD card. All files are open source and found in the android tree. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ## About what you need You need to have following stuff installed: * android SDK - for zipalign * jdk6 (not jdk7) - for keytool + jarsigner You can then the create the update file like this: * make SDKDIR=<path-to-android-sdk> It will ask you to create a key to sign the package. The 'out/update-final.zip' is the final outcome. If you don't want to download the android SDK, you can try removing the zipalign and SDK check from the Makefile. I don't think it is mandatory to align the zip, but it is a recommended optimization. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ## About the files You can build the binaries yourself, or grab them from an emulator. The Included binaries can be found on an android 2.3.3 system.img. I created my own build of the binaries, but it produced the same binaries as found on the 2.3.3 system.img from the Android SDK. You can verify the checksums, the files are exactly the same. I used this tag: android-2.3.3_r1 And this lunch target: full-eng The sources for these files can be found in the android tree: * bootable/recovery/updater/ * system/extras/su/ The updater-script is written in the edify language. The source code for the edify functions can be found here: * bootable/recovery/updater/install.c * bootable/recovery/edify/expr.c If you want to verify/fetch the files from a 2.3.3 image, you can boot an AVD, then fetch them using the debug bridge: $ adb pull /system/bin/updater $ adb pull /system/xbin/su An AVD is an Android Virtual Device, which can be booted using the AVD manager from the Android SDK (for Eclipse). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Have fun -- I am not responsible if you brick your phone!
