The new and improved facilities
This is where your pawns will acquire knowledge, using the study technology recipe, and also output their own expertise into books, using the document technology recipe. You can select which knowledge will be studied or documented on your colonists individual Tech tab. Both tasks are governed by the pawn's intellectual skill and the time it takes to complete them depends on the technology complexity.
In order to learn a technology, pawns must be assigned to Study on the work tab, the correspondent book must be available on your library and the pawn must already know all parent techs.
When it comes to writing books, the pawn must also be assigned to Study on the work tab and, obviously, he must know the desired tech already. Note that you only need to document research projects you haven't started the game with; starting techs are automatically considered documented.
Study Desks are limited to industrial-age or lower techs. For space-age or higher techs, use the Network Terminal.
They can be found at the Production menu on the Architect tab.
Cost to build: 25 steel + 75 wood/metal.
Books you buy or write yourself will only count as unlocked technologies when they're stored on a bookshelf. These constitute your library, and you should take good care of them. After all, a destroyed book means literally lost knowledge! Each shelf can store up to 10 books (but that number will increase if you're using mods that add more techs), and they link with research benches and study desks to improve researching and studying speed. This boost isn't a fixed and linear number, though. It depends on how many books your library holds on total, and the more books you have, the smaller the buff each book gives (it will also depend on how many techs there are in total).
They can be found at the Furniture menu on the Architect tab, or by selecting a study desk or research bench.
Cost to build: 110 wood.
This is the space-age replacement of the Study Desk, used to study and document technologies beyond the industrial era. It's more efficient, but instead of bookshelves it requires a Network Server to work. The connection is wireless, though, so the server doesn't need to be located on the same room as the terminal. For studying or documenting, it operates just like the study desk. But the terminal is also the gateway for uploading to the cloud techs contained in both books and drives you might own, using the scan books and drives recipe. Notice that this process consumes the hard drives, but leaves the books intact (which makes the book some sort of "physical hard-copy" of a digitally-archived tech). Also, notice that physical and digitally archived techs can be differentiated at the Tech tree by a book or cloud icon.
They can be built after discovering Microelectronics and can be found at the Production menu on the Architect tab.
Cost to build: 50 steel, 100 metallic, 5 components.
The server replaces the bookshelf, except it doesn't store physical items. All input and output is done through the terminal. In terms of capacity, the server doesn't really have a limit: a single machine will be enough to hold all colony knowledge. It's your own cloud storage! Having backup servers might be useful, though, since having your last server destroyed still wipes out all the stored data. You don't need to worry about managing copies of
each technology, though, the servers automatically mirror each other (even between settlements).
Also, it requires power to function.
It can be built after discovering Microelectronics and can be found at the Misc menu on the Architect tab.
Cost to build: 30 steel, 20 plasteel, 10 gold, 8 components.
We made the simple and high tech research benches more compact, considering you'll need lots of space for your new book shelves. Remember: books on connected book shelves improve research speed. Other than that, they keep their base characteristics, including the ability to connect with a multi-analyser.
They can be found at the Production menu on the Architect tab.
Cost to build (unchanged)
Simple Research Bench: 25 steel + 75 wood/metal.
Hi-Tech Research Bench: 10 components + 250 wood/metal.
The training dummy and the target stand are the facilities for learning to use melee and ranged weapons, respectively. They can be found at the Security menu on the Architect tab. Pawns must be assigned to study on the work tab to use them.
There are three recipes:
- Use learn weapon to acquire a new weapon proficiency. Any weapon will be made available for this once their associated technology is unlocked (i.e. added to the library).
- If you can't wait, you can use experiment with unknown weapon to make your pawns try to figure out how to use some advanced weapon you haven't researched yet. It's a long shot, the chances are slim (increasing with the intellectual skill). And if they fail, there's a chance they damage the weapon or even themselves in the process.
- Use Practice melee/shooting to simply improve the pawn's skill on that kind of weapon. It's an easy way to gain XP and keep them sharp!
Notice that the info for every weapon lists the tech that unlocks it, whether they are already learnable and if they require proficiency at all. Some simpler weapons and artillery, for instance, don't.
Cost to build
Training Dummy: 35 textile.
Target Stand: 25 wood.
