Checklist for New Members

As a new member, it can take some time before you get started on a new project, as there are always questions about the equipment, materials, rules, etc. To help get new members started as quickly as possible, we highly recommend that you complete each item on this list:

  1. Thoroughly read the "Welcome to Made" email that you received after you signed up
  2. Request to join the Made Whatsapp group, Google Group, and Trello team
  3. Send out a Hello, Made! message to the Whatsapp Group including a short introduction and a list of what you are interested in making.
  4. Look through the projects on our Trello Member Projects board. If you click on a card, it will bring up more details about that project. You can see what types of projects other members are working on, as well as adding your own ideas to the "Ideas for future projects" list.
  5. Read the Policies and Rules wiki page... actually, go ahead and read the whole wiki.
  6. Come to the space on different days of the week; you should meet and introduce yourself to as many of the other members as possible.
  7. Pick a project, buy the materials, ask questions, and start making!
  8. Keep making beautiful things- if you need a helping hand, just ask a fellow Made member.

Communication

Made members use several ways to communicate with each other, but the main channels are: Whatsapp, Google Group forum, and Trello. Members are encouraged to participate in discussions and to search through old posts before starting a new thread. As we have an international community here at Made, you can write in whichever language is most comfortable for you!

MADEbcn Whatsapp Telegram Group

Time-sensitive communications should be sent via our Whatsapp Telegram Group. Examples: "When is somebody going to open Made today?" "Has anyone seen the [tool]?" "We're doing something cool on [date|time]; you are invited!"

To join the MADEbcn Whatsapp Telegram group, check your inbox for the "Welcome to Made!" email you received from info@made-bcn.org when you first signed up at Made. In the attachment of the email there is an invitation link. Alternatively, you could nicely ask a veteran member to add you.

MADE Makerspace Discussion Forum (AKA the Google Group mailing list)

Announcements and general questions should be posted in our MADE Makerspace Discussion Forum (AKA the mailing list). Examples: "Can someone please lend me some filament for the 3D printer?" "I would like to organize a workshop on [date|time]; is that OK with everybody?" "We have received an offer from [company/organization]; does anyone want to follow up on this?"

To join the Forum, you must visit this link and request to join the Google Group. Your request should be approved within 24h. You can post new threads to the forum by sending an email to made-makerspace@googlegroups.com; please include an informative "Subject" text so that other members can find this thread in the future.

Where to Buy Stuff

If you need to buy something for a project, often times another member has material to spare; ask around to see if you can borrow/trade/buy from other members before going out for a shop! Most members are happy to share their private stash of wood, electronic components, or magic enchanted crystals with other members.

Where do members buy...

  • Assorted DIY materials:

    • Servei Estacio (MAP). Servei Estacio has a huge selection of materials and tools, but it is generally expensive.
    • Leroy Merlin (MAP). General hardware store with selection of materials and tools. Usually cheaper than Servei Estacio, but farther away.
    • Ferreteria J Valls (MAP). Near Joanic metro station; good place to get cheap nuts and bolts.
  • Wood:

    • Maderas Fargas (MAP). Maderas Fargas is near the Urgell metro station; they know several Made members and are likely to give you a good price if you say you are a member of Made. They will cut wood to size for you, and you can expect to pay ~15 euros for approximately 10 pieces of 3mm wood (30x60cm) for the laser cutter.
  • Acrylic:

    • Complas (MAP). Complas is near La Illa; they sell all kinds types of acrylic products. They have a scraps box (small pieces of assorted acrylic sheet) that sell for 1 euro per kilogram; this is a great deal, but there isn't always a good selection.
  • Electronics:

    • Diotronic (MAP). Diotronic has a large selection of electronic components, tools, microcontrolers, etc. However, expect to pay up to 10 times more than you would if you bought it online... This is a good option if you need something NOW.
    • Banggood.com. Banggood is a Chinese online marketplace with a large variety of items. They offer several shipping options [typically, the standard shipping takes ~1 month]. This is a popular site among members.
    • Ebay.com. Instead of using the Spanish version of ebay.es, ebay.com has more selection and lower prices. You will often find items for 50% cheaper on Ebay than anywhere else! However, customer service can be bad, shipping can take over a month, and return policies are generally non-existent.
  • 3D Printing:

    • eltucan.es. Shop in Barcelona located at Carrer Berguedà 7 (Les Corts, close to L'Illa mall) (see map). They are specialized in 3D Printing stuff and they sell PLA printer filament really cheap for less than 16€/Kg (cheaper than Amazon).
