Greenbone OpenVAS

Open Vulnerability Assessment Scanner | Greenbone Community Edition

The script will build and install a fully functional Greenbone Community Edition in the following steps:

  • Install the software required to build, install and run the scanner tools
  • Download and verify the source code
  • Build and install the scanner tools:
    • GVM_LIBS_VERSION=22.10.0
    • GVMD_VERSION=23.8.1
    • PG_GVM_VERSION=22.6.5
    • GSA_VERSION=23.2.1
    • GSAD_VERSION=22.11.0
    • OPENVAS_SMB_VERSION=22.5.3
    • OPENVAS_SCANNER_VERSION=23.8.2
    • OSPD_OPENVAS_VERSION=22.7.1
    • NOTUS_VERSION=22.6.0
    • OPENVAS_DAEMON=23.8.2
  • Configure systemd services

Prerequisites:

  • Debian 12

The script consists of hundreds of Linux one-liners taken from the original guide in the Greenbone documentation without any error checking logic.

Steps to install and run:

# Make user gvm and make the current user a member of gvm
sudo useradd -r -M -U -G sudo -s /usr/sbin/nologin gvm
sudo usermod -aG gvm $USER

# Make the shell aware of new group
exec su -l $USER

# Clone this repository and run the install script
git clone https://github.com/mendo1024/OpenVAS.git
. ./OpenVAS/debian_12_2024_12.sh

Expect 10-20 minutes of scrolling text and another 30 minuts or more of downloading the data feed.

The admin password is in file /tmp/pgadmin.pwd
