This MR is the first step to transfer the project to a more modern dependency and build control system - gradle and java 17.
In the plans:

Completely switch to gradle and its structure
Add style checking and error checking
Update dependencies to latest compatible versions
Translate to current versions with adaptation of API changes
Add admin panel to the assembly
Switch logs to slf4j+logback for logging
...
