If you think there is an issue with m4b-tool, first head over to the [Known Issues](#known-issues).

#### Before you start - notes about audio quality

In m4b-tool all audio conversions are performed with ffmpeg with descent audio quality using its free encoders.
However, to get the best possible audio quality, it exists a non-free encoder, that is not integrated in ffmpeg by default (licensing reasons).
Depending on the operating system you are using, installing the non-free encoder may require a little extra skills, effort and time (see the notes for your operating system below).
You must decide for yourself, if it is worth the additional effort for getting the slightly better quality.

> Note: The flag _--with-fdk-aac_ easily activates the non-free aac encoder for best audio quality - there should be no reason to skip that

> Note: For best audio quality with --with-fdk-aac, you could try to use a non-free repo, like https://launchpad.net/~spvkgn/+archive/ubuntu/ffmpeg-nonfree :
> ```
> sudo add-apt-repository ppa:spvkgn/ffmpeg-nonfree
> sudo apt-get update
> ```
> if this does not work, you have to compile yourself or must use the free codec with the command below
```
# Free codecs, not the best possible audio quality for aac / m4b
sudo apt install ffmpeg
```

If there is a file `data/my-audio-book/cover.jpg`, it will be used as cover for the resulting m4b file.
