What’s EmacsClient+

EmacsClient+ is a helper program that make the emacsclient more easy to use on windows (I like Ubuntu more than windows.)

What’s EmacsClient+ do for me

  1. EmacsClient+ will add ‘-c -a “”’ as the default options if there is no option be found in parameters, and
  2. use short description string, so that it will easy show in content menu
  3. fix the cygwin path for emacsclient in cygwin.

Why EmacsClient+

I want emacs as my major editor on windows, but the emacs very slow on windows especially with my personal configurations. So emacs daemon mode very helpful. And there is a new frame for a new buffer is nessarry.

On Ubuntu, we can create a .desktop file and set the ‘EXEC=emacsclient -a “” -c’ to run emacsclient,

  1. the ‘-a “”’ will make emacsclient try to start emacs daemon automatic if there is no daemon running, and
  2. the “-c” indicate emacsclient to create a new frame for current file.

But on windows, it’s not easy to do that. It seems no easy way to start emacs as daemon automatic. And if I want open a file that didn’t assosiated with emacsclient, I have to choose the program from “Open With” and navigate to the emacsclient folder, then select it. But, from this way, the emacsclient just associate with the file type, there will no action on screen when user double click on the assciated file if there is no emacsclient frame active.

So starting emacs daemon automatic and create a new frame for open a file is nessarry, and the Emacsclient+ will do for these.

Without EmacsClient+ ?

Yea, I’d use the original emacsclient for a while, the emacsclient-raw-mingw64.reg or emacsclient-raw-cygwin64.reg for that, they will add the necessary keys to registry, and that will help to use call `emacsclient -c -a “”` from content menu, the entries are hard to understand and there still no default “-c” option for associating the file extention type from right click.
