- just a comment from a purely clinical perspective. Regardless of the 'skill' of the measurer the standard for measuring a respiratory rate is over one minute. In practice this rarely happens but one aspect of the app should be for this time period. Some units do have a standard for 30s and maybe this should be included. I like Wai's idea of benchmarking the one minute system. In fact there is a real publication possibility here as I am fairly sure this level of detail hasn't been published. In may particularly area of interest - paediatric emergency medicine this has potentially great significance (the time needed to measure accurately). If a prototype can be partially built I could support this with some research funds as live testing of the accuracy of resp. rate measurement has huge relevance to the scoring systems I am developing. Feel free to contact me directly about this. - Damian Roland @damian_roland
@Damian_roland, this my exact thoughts! A real-life field trial. We have all been taught about the 1 min rule by this has never, to my knowledge, been tested in a large scale. You are so right about paediatrics!, Excited.` @wai2k
- it would be great if the app could take account of variation in the intervals between breaths to give an estimate of the precision of breaths/min calculation. No idea what distribution respiratory intervals follow but if you assume a normal distribution then this is a trivial calculation. Some clinical states are associated with disordered or irregular breathing, and may in themselves be a sign of "badness" beyond the crude respiratory rate. Note that I am not a respiratory specialist! Ben
