Sockets, Gems, Runes and Runewords
This page is all about the little item modifications you can make in Age of Exile. At first, you will need to craft a Gear Socketing Station.
The next step is finding items with sockets - each modification needs a socket. If you want to insert three runes into a chestplate it would need three sockets in total. You can add empty sockets to any item which can have sockets using a Crown of Discovery.
"Normal" items can have up to three sockets. If you get lucky you might find a relic - they can have up to five sockets.
Rightclick the Socketing station. Insert any item with empty sockets in the left field, insert a gem or rune in the right field, click on the hammer. You need to meet all requirements!
Both runes and gems work very similar. You can find them in chests and as loot drops from killing any hostile mobs. They offer bonus stats to increase your power or your defense, they change or add damage types and resistances.
There are nine different kinds of gems, each gem can has five sizes or rarities. You can upgrade gems with a normal crafting station. You need three chipped gems to craft one flawed gem. (shown in the picture). This means you need a total of 243 chipped gems to craft one perfect gem.
Keep in mind: you can only insert one gem per gemtype in any item. Which means you can not socket 3 rubies in one weapon. Stats are also capped at some % (WIP edit caps)
There are currently 13 runes in AoE and each rune gives you different bonuses. The difference between runes and gems is runewords, you can combine runes in sockets to create sequences.
If you insert any item with sockets (you need to meet all requirements!) you see the possible runewords. (little scroll icons)
Now use your runes one by one on the item and socket to create the runeword.
