Story

The story, as it stands right now, is that the main character starts in a city situated around the hole in the ground. It's a dense city, dated around Old England or a generic fantasy(?). The character heads to a "cat vendor" of sorts, that gives the character a special cat, making it stand out of the many other cats(?). It's implied that the vendor knows the significance of the cat. The MC walks through a vibrant, warmly lit, street market(?) to an extremely long rope bridge spanning the width of the hole in the ground. The MC pauses as they approach the bridge, looking uneasy. Once they reach the middle, the main character stops and peers down the pit. The camera pans out as creepy, almost Eldritch ambiance plays, with the main character and cat being a speck in the massive hole. The main character looks at the cat, hesitating, as the cat peers back. Then, slowly extending their arms over the rail and dropping the cat. As the cat goes out of vision, signs(?) of some higher being bestowing the MC with power. Something happens(?) and the character is now in layer 1, just below the surface, in the seemingly endless pit.

(Rewrite to match what we decided on the 23rd)

As the character starts in layer 1, they have the power to turn between human and cat. As the character progresses, it's obvious that layer 1 was the home of some civilization but was abandoned for some reason. As the MC progresses, they see paintings: warnings from the civilization that abandoned the layer. They showed the civilization sacrificing cats to the pit. At first, these actions grant the civilizations gifts of power, but over time, the civilization starts killing the cats before sacrificing them (consider only revealing killing the cats on the second layer). The civilization continues to be granted power, until the God stops suddenly. Panicking, the civilization sacrifices more cats, until the God eventually nearly wipes out the civilization. Leaving the stragglers to create the warnings the MC is reading, before habiting the grounds above the hole. This is why the character needs to get cats from a vendor, because the special cats that grant powers when sacrificed are outlawed. The character then reaches a bridge akin to the one from layer 0, then drops the cat the character guided through the layer off the middle of the bridge, gaining night vision human or cat (?).

Going through the second layer, it looks mostly as you’d expect. There isn’t much foliage as light can no longer reach this far but there are still ruins of a civilization. However, the stark difference between this and layer 1 is that there are instruments to ritually sacrifice the cats by killing them before they’re tossed into the pit, and it’s obvious that there is a lot of sacrificing going on. Just from the looks of it, the civilization sacrificed enough cats to give powers to everyone living there. There are also further murals that reveal the process of sacrificing the cats (?). Additionally, they show that killing them before tossing was more effective, and when they stopped receiving power from the god, they killed more cats and “refined” their ritual further (?). Finally, once the MC reaches the end of the layer, an almost eldritch growth starts appearing from the walls. Following it, reveals the bridge and the end of the second layer.

As the third layer progresses, the growth the MC followed into the layer starts getting more and more dense, until eventually, it’s not possible to see the walls of the hole. There’s not much more exposition until the end of the layer, when the player finally gets to meet the eldritch being at the bottom of the pit. While the specifics of the setting at the bottom haven’t been decided upon (?), the eldritch being at the bottom turns out to just be cuddling with the cats. Upon realizing that the cats the MC threw down were alive, the MC says their first lines of the game: “What the fuck???” The Eldritch being proceeds to explain that it just wanted to cuddle with cats and showed gratefulness for those giving it cats to cuddle with by granting powers. When the old civilization started throwing down dead cats, the being was annoyed, but trying to be nice, it still continued to grant powers. But after a few years, it started to get really annoying, and when it stopped granting powers thinking they would drop living cats, they only dropped even more dead cats. So, in a fit of anger, it wiped out a significant portion of the civilization, scaring the remaining people to the surface, and causing them to outlaw the specific type of cat the being likes the most.
