This mask is intended for use by anyone - we want to enable people with the ability to make their own protective masks no matter where they are in the world.
The mask is cast using 2-part silicone, and the molds can be made with any common 3D printer.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused mass numbers of people to begin developing at-home or DIY masks to prevent the spread of the virus. Upon careful investigation of current masks like commercial N95 masks, testing, and interviews with PPE experts, we found that none of these masks actually protect the wearer from particulates on the micron scale. This is because paper and fabric are inherently unable to create a seal against skin - letting particulates in through the cracks in the seal. We discovered these masks only protect people around the wearer from any potential infections the wearer might have.
sort of the opposite of what masks claim to do...
We set out to create a mask which
- Forms a solid and consistent seal around the face
- Protects the wearer from inhaling bacteria and viruses in the environment
- Can be made at home
- Can be easily cleaned and reused
