Notes from Paul Peucker: “You asked about standard id’s for Moravian archives. We use the following abbreviations: Moravian Archives, Bethlehem: MAB, MOARC (is our OCLC abbrevation) Unity Archives, Herrnhut: UA But I am not aware of any other standard abbreviations. With abbreviations, we usually transcribe them in full without brackets, etc. Only if the abbreviation is uncertain or unusual we leave the brackets to alert the reader to the fact that the word was originally abbreviated and that there may be other possible solutions. So “Breth. Cong.” in the original ecomes “Brethren’s Congregation”. Most of the superscript in old texts is used with abbrevations. Since we spell these out, that should not be a problem. Some people have the tendency to replicate all the oddities of the manuscript. I would only do that if the transcription is used as a tool for people to learn to read old handwriting, or if there is another reason why the peculiar layout has to be preseved. The transcription should really be a tool for people to access the text. So we transcribe the long s as a normal s, the double hyphen (=) as a normal hyphen (-), etc. We do not modernize spelling, but with German texts it is common to modernize the capitalization and punctuation. The spelling remains the same as in the original.”
