Retrospective patterns and process variability

(A Nielsen)

Retrospective patterns are often caused something changing over time (selectivity, natural mortality, catchability, uncertainty) which is assumed constant in the model. State-space models can include time-varying quantities. Are state-space assessment models helpful in dealing with and diagnosing where in the model there are things changing over time?
