Installation guide
Here is the official installation guide for Rolling Rhino Remix. This guide assumes that you have created a bootable USB drive with a Rolling Rhino Remix disk image, if you have not, you can find guides online for how to create a Live bootable Linux USB on Windows, macOS or Linux.
When you boot from your Live USB you will be greeted with the GRUB Bootloader, which is the most commonly used bootloader for Linux systems. You will want to select "Try or Install Rolling Rhino" - Which should be selected by default, and press enter.
On the next screen you will see two options, "Try Rolling" and "Install Rolling", you should select "Install Rolling".
Next you will be required to choose your preferred language and keyboard layout, after you have selected this, click on continue.
In this step, we must choose the installation type. There two options, Normal and Minimal Installation. In the normal installation you will be provided with a graphical user interface and all GUI related applications to get you started with your system out of the box. This is the most recommended option for beginners to Rolling Rhino Remix or Linux in general. In the minimal installation only basic applications and command-line utilities will be installed. A desktop environment (Graphical User Interface) and any graphical applications will not be installed. The minimal installation option requires heavy use of the command-line to get a running system and is not recommended for beginners.
It is strongly recommended to install software updates during installation, and if your PC requires it, to install third-party software for Graphics and Wi-Fi hardware. If you are unsure if your device requires third-party software (Proprietary drivers), it is recommended you select this option.
You will be presented with two options for disk management:
- Erase disk and install Rolling
- Something else
The first option will erase the contents of an entire disk drive to install Rolling Rhino Remix. The second option allows for you to partition your drives and use available free space to dualboot alongside different operating systems.
If you are new to Linux, then it is recommended to go with first option, however please be aware that your previous operating system, such as Microsoft Windows, will be erased. If you would prefer to dualboot, it is recommended to search online for a guide such as: "How to dual boot Ubuntu with Windows 10/11" and follow the steps demonstrated.
Next you will be required to choose your preferred location, this is so that download mirrors and the system clock are correct.
Finally, you will be required to create your user and set a host name. In this step, specify the local username and its password.
Once you have successfully installed Rolling Rhino Remix it is recommended to read our Quick Start guide, please use the guide that applies to your installation type:
