Import Into Scene

"Import into Scene" allows you to Import any Alias supported Published Files into your current stage. This option works the same as the Alias "Import File" as uses the Alias options already set.

Import as Reference

As of tk-alias v2.0.6, Shotgun supports loading supported 3D formats as references. "Import as Reference" allows you to Create an Alias reference from any supported Published File like WIRE files, CATParts and more. After successfully creating a reference, you can use all of the normal functionality with the Alias Reference Manager and update your reference to the Shotgun Scene Breakdown app. If you're already using Shotgun, but don't see this feature, follow the instructions here.

Import as Reference from another project

If you use Shotgun with the Basic config, (no templates defined), Shotgun & Alias will translate the file in the same folder as the source file before referencing into Alias.
If you use Shotgun with an Advanced config (default2), when you "Import as reference" a file from another project:

  • If the library project doesn't have a reference_template defined in the config, the file will be translated in place in the library project.
  • If the library project has a reference_template, this template will be used to define the path for the translated file.

If the Project you are importing from has multiple pipeline configurations, Shotgun & Alias will use the following logic.

  • If the project has one config, this config will be used to determine the reference template
  • If the project has multiple configs, but only one is project-centric, this config will be used to determine the reference template
  • If the project has multiple configs, but one is called "Primary", this config will be used to determine the reference template
  • If any other scenario, we're assuming that we can't retrieve which configuration to use and no reference_template could be found. The file to be referenced will be translated in place

* If you get an error creating a reference from a Linked Project

These are the fallback rules to resolve the Project / Pipeline Configuration that a PublishedFile comes from:

  1. If one and only one Pipeline Configuration is restricted to the Project, use it
  2. If one Pipeline Configuration is named Primary and linked to the Project, use it
  3. Generate an error message for any other cases

To correct this, please ensure you have a Pipeline Configuration named Primary assigned to the Project.

Import Subdiv

As of tk-alias v2.0.5 and with Alias 2020.2 or newer, Shotgun will now provide support for Import Subdiv's for the following Alias supported file formats: OBJ, TSM, F3D, SF3D

Creating Canvases

If you choose an image Published File and select "Import into Scene", Shotgun and Alias will automatically create the image on a Canvas for you. This works for most standard images that Alias supports (ex. JPEG, PSD, PNG). This allows an Alias users to quickly use the latest 2D Design in their Alias session.
