Community Monitors
What they want to search for in the MVP and why:
-
Community reports on impacts of mining to tell impact stories on human rights and socio-economic development.
-
Mining company hierarchies and shareholding to compensate for lack of information on subsidiary mining operation by tracing them back to their parent companies (which would have more detailed information).
-
Taxes paid to both local and national government to understand how the state is benefiting from mineral resources.
What the MVP should offer
- Community content creation (upload of stories and photos) geared at exposing impact on daily lives in terms of human rights and development. How are people affected by these mining operations? Linking back to the main corporate players behind the mining operations in question? Are the communities benefiting from mining operations in terms of development and how?
Feature example: I click on a mine on the map, and I am presented with community stories that relate to that mine (pictures, something that exposes the human aspect behind these mining operations)
- Comprehensive navigation of company hierarchies, with particular emphasis on the relationship between parent companies and their local subsidiaries.
Feature example:* *I select an international mining company and am shown, on a map, all mines they are involved with (e.g. subsidiary mines). It’s some sort of a snapshot of the extent of operations of international mining companies.
- How much money is the state capitalizing on mineral revenue, develop a sense of fairness (or not) in government deals with the mining companies.
Feature example: Visualization of flow of tax payments made by companies. Maybe categorized by specific mines, regions, or minerals. If possible, there would be categorization of type tax payments as well.
Prioritization MVP feature prioritization in terms of feasibility in relation to the Replication Sprint: 2, 1, and 3.
