Chiller
Chillers are used to cool down Electromagnets as part of your Large Hadron Collider setup. Higher tiers are more efficient and can reach lower temperatures.
A Chiller is placed in a corner directly next to 1 or 2 main Electromagnet of the same tier. In other words, a void shell should be exactly found exactly 1 block in diagonal above or below it.
When placed at an invalid position, the chiller has no effect and remains offline with a dimmed color. Once the Accelerator Controller is enabled, the chiller will light up and animates.
Basic Chillers are you all around water cooling system, reaching 0 °C in best cases. It's good enough for your Basic Electromagnets to work efficiently and will help to kick-start higher tiers.
They are produced from 2 Snow blocks, a Ghast tear, 2 Steel ingots, a LV motor, 2 Steel Bars and an Basic (Plain or Glass) Electromagnet.
Depending on other mods installed, Steel can be replaced with Iron (no steel), and Snow replaced with Ice (Cryotheum).
Nitrogen cooling is the heart of Advanced Chillers, allowing to reach the 200 K (-70 °C) required for Advanced Electromagnets operation. They can also be used with lower tiers but it's generally considered a waste of energy.
They are produced from 2 Ice blocks, a Ghast tear, 2 Diamonds, a MV motor, 2 Steel Bars and an Advanced (Plain or Glass) Electromagnet.
Depending on other mods installed, Steel can be replaced with Iron (no steel), and Ice replaced with Packed Ice (Cryotheum).
Helium is a finite and very demanded resource in the universe. It's also the best cooling for superconducting materials like the Advanced Electromagnets. Superior Chillers allows to reach 7 K (-263 °C). They are fairly inefficient for initial cooling, so you want to mix them with other Basic and Advanced Chiller for faster cooling.
They are produced from 2 Packed Ice blocks, a Ghast tear, 2 Emeralds, a HV motor, 2 Steel Bars and an Superior (Plain or Glass) Electromagnet.
Depending on other mods installed, Steel can be replaced with Iron (no steel), and Packed Ice replaced with Cryotheum dust.
Chillers are automatically handled by the Accelerator Controller. They draw power from the accelerator itself, through it's Subspace Capacitor.
Chillers have different efficiency and power consumption depending on their tier and current temperature:
- a Basic Chiller only works above 0 °C but still consume a bit of power below that temperature
- an Advanced Chiller is most efficient below 0 °C and only operates above 200 K.
- etc. Thanks to recent advancements in fluid transportation, chiller energy consumption doesn't change with the accelerator size. However, the latest will influence the time required to reach the same operating temperature.
Due to the heat emitted during their operation, it's recommended to step away from operating chillers, unless you want to be cooked that is...
In compact designs, it's possible to have the same Chiller working for multiple Large Hadron Colliders.
All things considered, the cooling time increases with the number of electromagnets in the accelerator.
