Discussion

  • Oguz showed his PR.
  • We said "these initial 20 Turkish sentences are a work-in-progress."
    • We want to keep these sentences at the center and small in amount. If there are issues, please raise them.
      • These issues may be due to:
        • not being able to translate certain parts,
        • sentences not covering the range of issues within your Turkic language.
    • Sentences will have to be increased to cover new issues, raised by participants. Existent sentences can be changed if found necessary.
  • Tatar translation document by Chihiro
  • We’re more interested in morphosyntax, rather than fluent translations. (Çağrı)
  • (1) Bizimki yazlıktaki çocuk odasını apar topar derleyip toplamış, mutfağın masasını da elden çıkarmıştı.
    • Jonathan mentioned "we need context for translation." and "bizimki is weird."
    • Büşra offered to add this sentence "Eşim yazlıktaki çocuk odasının penceresini apar topar temizlemiş, mutfağınkini temizlememişti."
  • (4) Ayşe bir doktor.
    • Copula cannot be split. Null elements are not allowed in UD.
  • (8) Sude üç saattir ofiste yokmuş, Ayşe de evde değilmiş.
    • Jonathan: "saattir" usage not found in Kyrgyz.
  • (14) Bugün mü yapılacak etkinlik?
    • question particle is always at the end in Kyrgyz. Intonation is used for emphasis. (Jonathan)
      • Southern Azerbaijani does away with the particle and uses intonation. (Soudabeh)
      • Intonation is used in Kumyk. (Aydemir)
    • Bügenme is one token in Tatar (Chihiro ; Bugün mü)
      • Jonathan in favor of splitting.
      • Splitting decisions will have to be discussed in the future.
  • (16) Ayşe bu kitabı okumuş değil.
    • "değil" is not common in Southern Azerbaijani. (Soudabeh)
    • "değil" is sentential negation in Turkish. (Büşra)
    • It means "It's not the case that Ayşe read this book."
    • "Ayşe otobüsü benim yüzümden kaçırmış değil." 2 meanings:
      • She missed the bus, but not because of me.
      • She didn't miss the bus.
  • Öğretmen kitabı okula alıp gitti. (extra ; Jonathan)
    • Kyrgyz: Muğalim kitepti mektepke alıp bardı.
    • Kyrgyz and Turkish have different meanings here.

Communication

  • Universal Dependencies Matrix room: #_u-dep:matrix.org
  • Mailing list is OK for general communication, it's archived and easy to follow.
  • We would like to use GitHub Issues and Discussions for further specialized discussion (e.g. issues with a certain sentence).

Actions

  • Document translation decisions
    • We need to document why we translated certain parts the way we did within a document. Wiki or the repository is useful for this.
  • We will have another meeting in 2 weeks. Doodle will be shared by Büşra.
  • Büşra requested "if possible, can translations have glossed pdf versions as well, for future reference?"
