What does this indicator measure?

Definition: This indicator evaluates the percentage of the indigenous population or other ethnical groups in a territory. It should be considered a disaggregation of indigenous or ethnic groups. Depending on the context, not all ethnic groups should be grouped by the term indigenous and should be considered as a different measure.

Calculation:

  • Unit of measure: number of people
  • Formula:

Numerator: # of indigenous people in a territory.

Denominator: Total population that lives in the territory.

Indicator considerations:

Data sources:

  • National census
  • Official population projections

Comments and limitations: There are many ways of measuring ethnical groups in a territory. The best practice is to measure it in accordance with the person's self-identification. Another technique that national statistics institutions may use is to measure the principal language a person speaks, but that approach measures more linguistic communities in opposition to ethnical groups.
